When I click “PUBLISH” on this post, my brood and I will pile into the Family Truckster and head west for a long weekend in what is ironically my Second (favorite) City – that I haven’t lived in – Chicago. The kids are on, what our school district calls, Mid-Winter Break on Monday and Tuesday, so, with a little personal time burning a hole in The Wife’s lab coat, we’ll go spend a few days in the Windy City seeing the sights and sampling the local fare. The girls have never been to Chicago, so this will be a new experience for them, but, as a family, this will also be a unique experience because we tend to recharge in other ways.
I know a lot of families take advantage of every school break to go somewhere or do something. We’re not those people. Don’t get me wrong… we vacation… we travel…. we do fun stuff… but we tend to do it when everyone is doing something else. When I committed this year to “REclaiming 13“, two of the five areas of focus were motivated largely by my family and cherishing the time together as they continue to grow so quickly. My goal to both REnew and REconnect in 2013 casts a broad net, but it also has times of laser focus when it comes to my family.
And it’s not that staying home during the break and enjoying each other’s company isn’t great, but, this year, I want more.
My girls have never been to Chicago. They’ve never had the pizza. They’ve never ridden the “El”. They’ve never walked the Magnificent Mile. It’s going to be a weekend of firsts for them. And I get to be there. I’ve been there for so many of their other firsts… but how many more will I get to be there for? Sure, there will be some… but… the chance of them happening organically grows smaller and smaller. That’s why I have to both take and make the opportunity. Some firsts will just happen, but I can help some of them along as well.
As a great Chicagoan once said, “Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
Now… a quick look at the week that was here at REMODELING CLAY
MONDAY – We STARTed the week by looking at a book (and possible movement) that I’m really excited to get behind.
TUESDAY – Our weekly recap of NBC’s The Biggest Loser.
WEDNESDAY – A marathon phone call turns into a lesson on the value of coaching.
THURSDAY – We celebrated Valentine’s Day by asking if you can love someone enough to hurt them.
FRIDAY – We admitted that I have a problem with “The First Step”.
Thank you for another fantastic week! You guys are the best!
Keep telling your friends!!! If you like it, SHARE it!
Have a safe and wonderful weekend wherever it may take you!
Now, if you’ll excuse me… I’ve got some pizza to eat.
