If you’re like most people, you made some type of commitment going into the New Year. Maybe it was to yourself. Get in shape. Quit smoking. Eat better. Exercise more. Go back to school. Maybe it was to work on your relationships. Be friendlier. Spend more time with the kids. Help the wife or husband out a little more around the house. For most people, January 1st marked a new beginning of something. Well… not January 1st per se. Most of us SAY January 1st, but, you’re still off work, there’s football on, a little hair of the dog…. we really mean January 2nd.
And, if you’re like most people, everything you vowed to change, you’ve blown at least once since then. Some of you lasted an hour. Others toughed it out a week. Some stumbled and fell off the wagon. Others leapt from the wagon, did a Michael Bay flick quality tuck and roll, and flipped the wagon the bird while cackling as it pulled away.
If you’re like most people, however, what you’re not doing today is celebrating your success.
I’m willing to massage the 24 hours window a little to say that if you started this change somewhere between the 1st and the 2nd — Congratulations… today marks Day 30! Stop. Assess the accomplishment and celebrate! Own it! Say it out loud!
“I’m doing it, Clay! I said I’d quit smoking and besides a few slips early on… I’m smoke-free!”
Good! Celebrate! You did something. You made a positive move in your life. You slipped, but you kept going. It may happen again or it may not, but remember how good it feels.
“What about me? I promised to eat better this year and I have a backseat full of McWrappers that tells a different story?”
You didn’t do it the past 30 days, but celebrate the fact that you’ve got another shot. Failure is not final. Everyday that you wake up north of the dirt is another opportunity to make changes.
Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
If the first 30 days of the year didn’t get your best effort… guess what… there’s another 30 coming right on its heals! Celebrate the opportunity!
Congratulations to every one of you! Whether tomorrow is the 31st day… or the very 1st…. YOU have an opportunity to make something happen in your life!
Are you going to take it?
